Featured 900 Straits Silver Dollar (1908).

Been after one of these for a couple of years now, and finally got my hands on one. A solid silver Straits Settlements dollar, to finish off my collection.

Does anyone know what's stamped on the coin? They're Chinese, and Arabic, but that's all I know...



My full collection, from 1c. up to $1.00! All the silver coins are 800 silver (except the dollar, which is 900).

 

The Arabic script is Jawi, after Jawa/Java. Jawi is modified Southeast Asian Arabic script, used in many Muslim regions of Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and the Philippines.
In the case of the Straits Settlements it would be the Malay language in Jawi script.

 

I think the Jawi text is a configuration of نݢري٢ سلت , which is Negeri2 Selat (Negeri-Negeri Selat), which simply means Straits Settlements in Malay. Negeri is land or state, when a word is doubled it is plural, selat is strait.
I expect the Chinese text to be the same.
