Some type of white ceramic (the white areas where the gold paint has come off look kind of porcelain-y up close) Painted gold on the outside and a black enamel on the inside. There is what appears to be a "3" hand drawn into the ceramic under the paint on the base. About 9" tall and 5" in diameter, holds about 1.25 liters/quarts. Looks kind of beat up/old but maybe just made to look that way. I'm having trouble finding others online that have this shape. I'm probably using the wrong terms. Any ideas on how old/ where from?

    Thank you once again!

    Aaron

    Looks more like a scoop?

Agree the top half looks kind of scoopish but I don't think I've seen a scoop like this before - and, ceramic? Might be though - I certainly can't rule it out, and I don't know beans about scoops.

It reminds me of mid-century Stangl Granada gold. Our next-door-neighbor had TONS of it in the 1960's!

I don't know rice about them either, & agree it is unscoop-like in many ways. But if you poured from this, wouldn't the liquid come out like a waterfall rather than a stream? And you could only fill to that line that runs around it. A lot of extra material & weight above that.

Good point - I just gave it a test. It's pretty wide at the front, ....but... rounded enough that at a moderate pouring rate, it comes out in a stream, not a waterfall. Although you got me thinking, maybe it's for washing/bathing?.

Something that way. Seems designed for liquid to come out in more of a gush, not the controlled flow you would want for pouring beverages.

the form reminds me of wash basin, bathroom, or toilet jugs.....all having large wide mouths....

I don’t think that gold is original. Looks like a spray paint job from the pix. I’d take it off, but that’s just me.

Thanks Kent... if I decided to remove the paint ...What's a good way to remove paint from ceramic?

Hi Aaron - Is it possible it's a scoop for solids such as grains rather than a scoop for liquids? Regardless it looks decorative to me rather than meant to serve a useful purpose. Most grain scoops are metal or wood rather than pottery or porcelain. A grain scoop can be useful for scooping packing peanuts from a box or bag.

As for removing the paint. The finish bothers me. First, see if you can determine if there is a glaze under the paint. It will be very difficult to remove the paint completely if there is not a smooth glaze underneath. If it seems chalkish underneath leave it be. If it glazed try the easiest first removal method first - a simple soak in warm water with maybe a little dishwashing liquid. If it doesn't start peeling then do not scrub. Let it dry out and try a stronger paint remover on a small section of the bottom. If it dissolves the paint without dissolving any of the material underneath it will be safe to continue.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!
    Don
