I've seen something similar for use in a Tank and boat or ship.

The lug or knob fits in a slot on a fixed base to stop it sliding about.

    Hi
I have since been told it may have come from an old church , hung on a chain next to a communal water fountain . What’s your thoughts cheers

Seems more likely they would have made a hook for that?

Maybe a naval ships alcohol measure

Is there a number on it, or perhaps the 1 is the measure size

What an interesting mystery!! Given the date of 1918, could it be associated with the US army and WWI? Or, could it be a railroad workman's cup that might be used in the crew car like a caboose?

How come I do a search for "cup with ball on the bottom" and first thing I see is a mug with Putin and Trump bare chested on a horse ......Yech! ........

Looks like a 1918 symbol you see on all the US military things. My guess this is like a fire bucket which was round on the bottom so people would not steal them.......

Maybe this was from a Kitchen mess, a water jug where you would go to get a drink from a communal cup ( pre-spanish flu_ ) . Or like was said , for doling out rum on a ship ? I am still looking ...interesting.
