I had no idea that the ugly birds the Martin Brothers made were based on a real bird. Holy moly! It's an African Shoebill. And it's gigantic! fa975034079459489a27fbf2f5120833.jpg The-Shoebill.jpg vn5Xw2n.png

It may not stand taller, but can probably reach over your head with that beak!

Just looked it up...it can actually get to 6 feet tall.

It would dwarf me! And it makes the oddest noises...

I covet a couple of things. A Martin Brothers bird and a Doulton Pushkin. (sigh)

The last Martin Brothers Shoebill sold at auction in 2013 for 21,000 English pounds (27,300 U.S. dollars) and that example was broken and re-glued. Wooley and Wallace Auction House. Original cost in 1885 was 3.30 pounds.

I remember the one on UK Antiques Roadshow where it was originally thought to be real, but turned out to be a fake.
    The punter was gutted.

Jivvy the research is my favorite

I have seen the live version in person (Lowry Park Zoo, Tampa Florida).

They are as startling as you might think. And fabulous.
