Has anyone heard of this? I am not tuned into mainstream social media (like Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok) so I must have missed it. I am always shocked by how popular and in demand thrifting has become. The thrifts in our area are always packed with 20 and 30 somethings with carts full of merchandise.

A lot has changed in the thrifting landscape since Macklemore & that song.

Never heard of it. FWIW, I never see any 20 or 30 somethings here going thru the racks at thrifts or at estate sales. Just us old folks. LOL

Thrift-Con. Call me cynical, but I bet thrifty people won't find too many bargains there.

The article talks about people flying in to attend. Perhaps airline fares are down due to the pandemic but I don't think it has ever been thrifty to fly somewhere or even travel that far due to gasoline prices.

I live in a college town so it might be different elsewhere but I see groups of both guys & gals in their 20s all the time at the local GW I frequent. They are mostly buying clothes but they often branch out to look at other areas.

Hmmm , sounds like me bitching about housewives with their I-phones ! The game has indeed changed ,but you roll with it or quit going. I have noticed the clothing prices have gotten ridiculous but I didnt care as I dont buy clothes at thrifts.

Not too long ago I saw very elegant and well dressed young lady at my church. I give her complement. She told me that she got all her clothes except personal stuff at second hand store, she told me she is doing it for multiple reasons: cost, environment and helping someone. I was most surprised that youngsters today think like this, some at least...

When I was in college I used to frequent the local hospital charity shop. Bought clothes, jewellery & books. Anyone need a complete set of the works of Alexander Pope from 1765?

Definitely hipsters are into thrifting here in my US city. And clothes are indeed the main thing they seem to be after. As I myself am not interested in clothes, there's room for both of us.

The things I am personally interested in do require a little background knowledge, and those same hipsters don't often have that knowledge or interest, so the things I like are still around.

Everybody's got a phone though, but that's another story...

Vintage (80s!) t-shirts are hot property now, especially old concert shirts. Some sell in the $100s. You betcha the college kids are hitting the thrifts looking for them.

My lovely goddaughter is very eco conscious. I buy her a huge box of clothes from car boots and such for Christmas. She loves it: serious designer gear sometimes.

In other times, I do cruises. Bestie, who knows me well, once stared at my suitcase and asked what hadn't come from a charity shop or a car boot. Basically, me undies and shoes. I was swanning round in a fabulous Moschino pure silk chiffon frock at the time. With suitable vintage bling, obvs.

Naturally. Church rummage/jumble bag sales are my friends. I do buy undies new, but if I find new ones my size at a jumble etc... game on!

Well I have a shelf full of 90's t shirts some never worn. I think I have to wait another 10 years till they become desirable. No concert ones tho. I don't like selling clothes because of all the precise measuring and such which I am not good at.

I've got signed T shirts from when I ran SF cons as a hobby. Won't part with them, but they've some serious worth.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

One of my nieces has been "thrifting" for clothes for many years. She has been interested in clothing and fashion since she was a small child. Now she is in her late 30s, and I assume she is still loving the thrill of the hunt. Haven't asked her about that lately.

Thanks for the links, @Joe2007 . Brought back memories...
