Featured Help With ID on Aurora Borealis Rhinestone Necklace

Okay Joolies, very sweet older lady I am trying to help can not get better pics or see well enough to see if there is a makers mark. She loves her thrift find though and the way the stones change color and would like to find more pieces. Does anyone have a guess as to a maker on this piece? I do not think the piece to the left has anything to do with the necklace in question by the way. Thank you for your time!

 

Cold-painted enamel with aurora borealis rhinestones. The colors on the stones are a special paint coating invented in the mid-1950s if I'm seeing it correctly. It could have been made by anyone, unfortunately. This is a classic 50s/60s necklace and lots of companies made them in more than one country.

 

Isn't that piece just the other earring, upside down?

There was guy last year that bought a Rhinestone necklace for his daughter to wear as a Princess at Halloween. Turns out to be a 125 thousand dollar DIAMOND necklace.

If it's Schiaparelli, say, yeah, a lot of dosh. Named or attributable pieces by good makers can make serious money. Come to that, if it's well made and pretty it's worth buying.

 

A Marcel Boucher piece, cha-ching! So, designers are the deal, but really, I think there are only a handful of designers worth picking up.

I suspect that most people who pick up and sell rhinestones do it because they can't stop themselves. I may be projecting.

If it's blingy, well made and stylish, it's always worth grabbing. And some of the best stuff isn't signed, either.

Eisenberg is another company that grabs big bucks. An elderly neighbor gave me some "costume" jewelry for my kids to play with. One was the Eisenberg fish brooch. After I learned how much it was worth, it came out of the toy box and up on eBay! Ugly old thing, though.

 

Some of the ugly stuff is worth buck$$$$$ - check for images of the Boucher Octopus some time. Butt-ugly, but by a desirable maker, and rare. Kaching. As Greg mentioned, more than one piece of "costume" has shown up on the Roadshow and elsewhere. Only it wasn't costume.

Another name is Delizza and Elster, aka D&E and sometimes mistakenly called Juliana. (they made a line with the name for a few years, but it gets misapplied to all and sundry) They never marked anything unless it was being "badged" for another company. But, if the stones aren't painted on the back (foiled) and are open-backed and it's seriously gaudy, get suspicious. Some of their pieces go for crazy money.

Real Chanel costume, and that's all they make, is crazy dosh too.

Not long ago, I bought a string of "plastic" beads in a thrift. They charged $5 for it. I turned around and flipped it for $1000 - three zeroes. It was hand-carved vintage amber. The retail was probably twice that. Always check out the plastic too!

 

wow, will do so. i even look for bakelite pieces as well now, the places i look in usually have loads of beaded type necklaces so its worth knowing whats what

 

That will take a little practice. A lot of it can be spotted, but some is harder. A clue is often the weight - bakelite beads weigh more than acrylic.
