Hi I have 3 of these chairs. They are solid hardwood of some sort. Not sure if the pics show it but they seem to be put together with wooden pegs or dowels rather than screws or bolts. They certainly look old but hey I could easily be wrong on that. I can't see any markings on them anywhere which may be of help. Hopefully the unusual style may be familiar to someone on here. Thanks

Welcome, @Huw. Your pictures are set to "private" which is why only you can see them. Change the setting on your Album to Public and they will appear in your original post.

Well, they are oak & have 3 legs, I'd say 20th century. 3 leg chairs have been around since the 17th century.

No one knows exactly what the deal is on these chairs, some speculate they were cheaper to make, others say it was because floors back in the old days were uneven or sometimes dirt & 3 legs managed those issues better. It could also be wood turners just showing off! or a little of all the above! :cigar:

Im thinking 1970s,but I do get an arts and crafts feel,so they could be earlier.

I am getting a small shop or craftsperson made feel about these. Agree with a circa 1970 date. Another option would be a Scandinavian import, though the use of oak for such would not be typical.

No expert here, but if I recall correctly, my third grade teacher put me in the corner of the classroom many times on a chair like that.:sour:
