He was a traitor. it’s about 5 inches tall and extremely detailed. How do i know how much it is worth with sotheby’s saying they’re unable to value it or price it because it’s ivory? i’m itching to know! and yes i have it legally from my grandfather after he died.
by the way i’m not a collector or anything. i’ve had this for 10 years and i just thought it was a cool thing to look at while i did my dishes. and no my grandfather never told me anything about this item. he just told me before he died to take anything i wanted from
    his house.

"French school" means it was made in France but it is not known by whom. Your piece would be considered French School too but it may not be from the same workshop. Interestingly, the triptychs are not identical. Also, the National Trust example is more finely done and the condition is better.

Why do you think they're not supposed to be identical?

well mine is not supposed to be a replica of that. there are all kinds of trypticks. they happen to depict the same thing and look alike but they’re not copies of each other. if you google ivory tryptick you will see all different kinds.

It is an amazing piece, Ashley.
I think opinions may vary on that.
When Cromwell came to power many Royalists fled to France and the Low Countries, so a French made Royalist piece makes sense. 'Arrestation de' is French too.
My guess is Dieppe ivory. The town of Dieppe had some of the best ivory carvers in the world.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

With that information, I searched Dieppe ivory triptypch and found many interesting images. Fun!
