Looks like a jumper or dressage outfit.

I was thinking steeplechaser or jumper!!! That rider's no "spring chicken" and it tends to look like that poor horse didn't get a 'cool down' walk after!!!

Do steeplechase riders get that dressed up?

Oh! Is that white stuff "lather?"

Fox hunt would be my guess. With the sash, maybe Master of Hounds? (Talking through my hat here.)

In the old days, wearing pinks would have been standard procedure. The man probably has more mileage on him than the horse does.

Yes, steeplechase riders get dressed up. So do dressage riders. And foxhunters. And yes, the horse is lathered up; picture doubtless taken just after the ride.

If it's a winner's circle photo, that could account for the sash. Being a city boy, I don't know nuttin about no horses, nohow. Like evelb30 said, the rider looks like he's got a fair few years on him. How does age play into these various activities?

He's wearing a competition number so showing, not fox hunting or steeplechasing.

Dressage would fit, and there have been Olympic dressage riders who were in their 50s and 60s. Age can be a serious advantage in that sport if you're still physically up to it.

Uh, I must say his position isn't proper for dressage:pompous::cigar::joyful:... legs forward, rounded back...

Kyratango is correct... Unless our elderly gentleman is Really relaxing after effort.

(There is a bit of a resemblance to John D. Rockefeller and/or family)

What's interesting is that the saddle blanket has pockets.
I can't think why any of the horse sports mentioned would have those.

    Hunter or trail?

    @clutteredcloset49 raises a valid question.

To confuse matters, I have looked and looked and looked, and the only competition I have found with this sort of number + this style of dress is steeplechase -- speaking of the time period I'm guessing this photo is (1940s-ish).

Which doesn't mean much except there is more looking to be done.

    Charlie,
Anything on the back, and can photo be removed safely to look for writing?

That's a good observation. Would each of the sports have a specific style of saddle?
