Hi, I'm Cindy Joan a new member here. I really like glass, but am new to the subject. I found at a rummage sale this beautiful set of 4 demitasse cups and saucers. It has this makers mark on the bottom, and it's in great shape so I guess it's not old. I would really like help identifying this glass so I turn to the experts! I'm a bit tech challenged so let's see if this works! Thanks in advance for any information you can give. Blessings, Cindy Joan 20180826_111119 (1).jpg 20180826_111119 (1).jpg 20180826_111119 (1).jpg 20180826_110833.jpg 20180826_110920.jpg 20180826_110700.jpg

That first one is a very interesting site. Thanks for pointing me there. I've looked a bit at the second one and some books on carnival glass before trying here. I think it will be awhile or at all before I can identify the maker. Thanks for your response.

I think the primary pattern on your cups and saucers is "beads" so I search under that section of ddoty without success. I also did not see your mark listed on his site. I'm wondering if the glass was given an iridescent finishing spray and qualifies more as iridescent as opposed to true carnival. The clear area of the saucer is what made me think of that. I'm also going to guess this is an import. I think if it was a US piece someone would have recognized it and/or the mark by now. Please bear in mind this is my own opinion and others may very well feel differently.

This makes a lot of sense to me, but I’m trying to decide the color of glass from the saucer. Would it be Smokey or more of a green? I can’t really decide because of the other treatment.

To me it looks like a golden amethyst or even blue spray but that could be the light. Usually you identify the color of carnival glass by the color of the underlying glass. If the color of the underlying glass is purple it's amethyst carnival. If the underlying glass is orange it's marigold carnival. And so on. Since your underlying glass is clear (or is it smoky) it makes it a bit difficult.

It’s me, not OP, I was just going to try and find something like it. Thanks.

Smoke was a bit of a rare color as it didn't make the prettiest presentation. Imperial produced smoke, I believe, but not many others. If searching try "beaded swag."

This is all very interesting to me. I see that this color is more rare or should I say uncommon. The cup seems cobalt blue on the inside but the outside bottom was purplish. And it looked a bit green on the saucer. I had no luck identifying this at all do I greatly appreciate your help. At the very least I have a name for the pattern. If this is iridescent and not carnival does that mean it's not worth much?

Not necessarily. Value is always subjective. In other words, value is what someone is willing to pay. Most of the iridescent glass I come across is fairly common. Patterns like Jeannette's Floragold for example. Yours are uncommon so it's possible that someone looking for four cups to add to their demitasse set would be willing to pay what they consider a reasonable amount above what other iridescent glass might sell for. What that reasonable amount is is anyone guess. At the very least they are quite interesting. Personally, I think it's a nice find no matter what it ends up being worth.

Thank you! I like them. At this point I don't know what to do with them, but it's been fun and a learning experience. Blessings, Cindy

A bit of a correction: marigold carnival has a clear (colorless) base glass. I don't know of any carnival with an orange base color. The other exception that I can think of is white carnival, which is on a clear base.

The OP's glass is bit perplexing. Somewhere in the deep depths of my mind, I think I have seen this pattern. However, I don't want to delve to deeply, as one may not want to see what might be best forgotten.

Most carnival was not iridized on the bottom, so I might lean toward newer.

I was thinking newer as this set is in great condition - no chips and no wear at all. But the lady I purchased it from just might have stored it nicely - she did give me two extra saucers that had no plates with them.

If where you've seen this before floats up from the depths - I would really like to know!

I keep wondering if this was not decorated by an independent for the after market. ala Hanson and Crider

I do apologize for my incorrect statement regarding orange carnival glass. Somewhere in the back of my mind I knew the correct information but it didn't make it's way through the muck to the front.

Part of what is throwing me on these is the shape. I can't think of a single carnival glass company that produced demitasse cups and saucers.
