I recently inherited a cigarette case engraved, Lionel Street MD from Princess Der Ling. I researched and now know who the princess is, but no idea about the doctor. Any thoughts?

Karen, please post a photograph of your item so we can all see it. And, as you now know who Princess Der Ling is, would you be kind enough to share that information with us?

Lionel A.B. Street was a physician at St. Peter's Hospital and Dispensary in Kyoto, Japan at the turn of the last century as part of the Episcopalian mission.

In 1930 he was living in Los Angeles, at the Parkway Hotel,

Born in "English Canada" (aka Ontario) in 1870, immigrated in 1888. At the time he was married to Emily M age 58 (he was 60)

He may have run across your princess a bit later, in 1919 when he was living and practicing in Shanghai, China.

Ah, they may have crossed paths in Los Angeles then as the princess lived there in (roughly) the 1920s and 1930s. This is why a photograph of the cigarette case would be helpful. It's country of origin would help determine in what period of his life it was bestowed which, in turn, would help us extrapolate the circumstances (as would the message.)

Emily's maiden name was Monteaux. Previously married to a Mr. Shields. Had a son William Emmett Shields, born NYC in 1890.

Lionel's full name was Lionel Alexander Burnet Street. Born Sept 29 1869.

Don't know the relationship between the doctor and the princess, but they did not marry each other from what I can see.

I wish I knew how it ended up with my family, but my father died last month and was the last person to have that info. There is one connection... my great grandfather, grandmother and father were all born in Japan (although we are not Japanese)...so that’s the only connection I have. Wish I knew though how it ended up in my family

Karen, I see you're a new member so just a few things that are useful to know about posting photographs. Please use Full Image when uploading; that way your photographs will be easier for all to see. Right side up if you can. And always photograph items in good light on a plain background. Most importantly, do photograph the entire object -- all sides -- along with close-ups of any marks.

You know, oddly the front of the case is as I posted the pic. I know it looks upside down but the “head” is on the bottom. Dragon?

I take it there are no "marks?"

Yes, the animal is a dragon, with the flaming pearl and 5 claws per foot.
