    Hi all,
I bought a Regency sewing box and underneath it has it's original paper with some stamped wording, some of it is clear to see and some not so much.
The first letters aren't too clear and right at the very bottom it says 1816 but because the paper is damaged I can't make out anything else.
Can you all cast your beady eyes over it and tell me what you see?
    Thank you :) IMG_2939.jpeg

Some words and dates but can’t make much sense of them.

Ah thank you, I can't see anything more than 1816 at the very bottom.
    I think it's Prompt8th 1820, not 18th.

I assume that 2d was two old pennies.
Prompt? no idea what that means.
No idea what the Elizabeth was unless that was the name of the sale room.

Dont know if it makes sense either, but could The Elizabeth mean the ship?

I suppose it could do, none of it makes any sense though.

I can't offer any more help than you've already received but wanted to say that I'm hoping to see photos of the entire box! :)

It is a mystery, the dealer I bought it from was puzzled too.

It needs work inside but I'll be sure to post photos when I've done it :)

Maybe the paper was recycled from something else and the writing had nothing to do with the box itself.

It would be helpful to see a photograph of the box itself.

I thought about that but the paper is exactly the same as the paper inside the leather envelope in the lid so it's original to the box.

I'll do that in a few days.

The first year after I.S. is also 1820.

And there is another 1816 on the very bottom edge underneath the first 1816.

It seems to have some relation to importation sales. Some of the foreign goods were refused for importation for whatever reason (I’m thinking just not deemed profitable enough) and the wording they use in the importation reports is very similar to the writing on this paper. The one I looked at was reports from the East India Trading Co. in 1804.

Perhaps someone just thought the marbled paper looked nice and had enough blank paper for the inside and put the rest on the bottom. However there is the possibility there is more writing on the inner piece if you were to remove it (probably not a good idea unless it’s very loose).

If it relates to the US this info might apply:

In March 1820 The Missouri Compromise prohibited slavery north of 36 degrees, 30 minutes north latitude.

There was a Convict ship The Elizabeth but it was sailing from England to Australia from August to December 1820. (probably the same ship as referenced in wikipedia listing above.)

There was a Slave ship The Elizabeth but it was captured by the French in 1811.

Elizabeth in North Carolina was a port of entry from 1814 on.

I saw the 1816 at the very bottom but the rest is missing which is a pity ....

That's really interesting and sounds plausible. It's the most likely scenario.

The marbled paper inside the lid in the leather envelope has always been there and there is a stamp 1820 (I forgot to mention that)
The paper in the lid and on the bottom are original to the box......
