Canada Black Seal Figure Inuit or Soapstone?

This stands 3 1/2" tall and is about 6" long. Base has a number, initials and a sticker which doesn't stick anymore.

Glad I remembered it then. So you know it's "Eskimo made from Canada" but what the stone is, I don't know. Perhaps @komokwa can say.

 

I think it's been a while since "Eskimo" was an acceptable description.

 

True - but that's what those labels say - "eskimo art."

Not me. Idle guess would be soapstone.

 

Maybe someone else recalls the exact date for those stickers; they do indicate genuine "Eskimo" art from Canada, and I'm thinking it was 60s-70s.
There are three main types of stone used for such carvings; soapstone, serpentine, and a gray sedimentary rock sometimes called slate or argillite (but not the argillite of the Haida).
This looks to me to be harder than soapstone, and probably is slate.
Others will know more than I, surely.
