Welcome, Instafojo! I'm pretty sure you have a sterling brooch, made in the UK (and relatively recently - 20yrs? - given the font of the N in the righthand group of marks on the back.) But the other 2 in that group of 3 are a bit unclear. I was thinking Irish at first, but the other group of 3 marks (on the lefthand side of the back) seem to imply either Sheffield or Birmingham. Do you have a macro function on your camera?

On the left. 3 very close together (I think) but a better closeup may resolve that.

Of that group, the one on the right is clearest - a crown on it's side which might be Sheffield.

I don't know why I said "or Birmingham" above. I was rushed when I typed that and did not intend to leave that there. Birmingham would be an anchor - and I don't see an anchor anywhere.

    Thanks all.

I will try some macro shots tommorow.

My thoughts were the left had the initials GUS or ?US and the left hand of the right symbols was a standing up lion.

I was also wondering if the 2 different birds eating the fruit were representing something.

They may have some meaning or something they represent, but unfortunately I don't know what it may be.

I look forward to seeing the additional pictures.

Your mention of a "standing up lion" (known as a lion rampant) now makes me think Scotland, specifically Edinburgh. The marks display in this link show all the years in which an N was used by the assay office there. Note that in 1987, the lion rampant, 3 towers and letter N look like a good match for the marks on your brooch.

    Yep

I think this must be it.

Its hand made by a designer called Ola Gorie on the island of Orkney in Scotland.

I think i paid one pound for it in a car boot sale a few years ago......

Thanks so much for all your quick responses and help.

Ola Gorie makes lovely stuff. I bought a HUGE brooch of hers at a car boot a few years back for fifty pence. The company confirmed it was one of theirs, to my great pleasure. Silver, but not hallmarked as such.

    Hi,
Two birds like that are often seen in Pennsylvania Dutch (Amish) designs.

Because it is always a good bet since it is the most prolific silver manufacturing town in Britain?;)
