Looking at those hats made me think of this CDV (dated 1891):

Cute! At what age did little boys finally get their hair cut back then? Anyone know?

Found an interesting surprise in what was supposed to just be a costume for an opera company. Will open a militaria thread with more pics tomorrow, if anyone is interested. In the meantime, it is a fun hunt to figure it all out!

The badge is the Order of the Bath. If the guy was wearing that, he had to have done something significant. Definitely NOT a costume.

A close up of the medal ribbons would make it possible to decide if they were a possible real group or just fruit salad.

Unfortunately it was indeed used by the Opera Company as a costume, then they gave it away in a purge of old costumes we got. Was surprised when we looked closer.

Have just posted a bunch of pictures, including the ribbons in a new Militaria thread Trying to figure out for sure what I have and whether the jacket is original to the buttons/ribbons, etc.

This cigarette case was $4 because it is unmarked

I'm confident it is solid silver. It was completely handmade. The brass looking parts seem to be an old varnish to keep it from tarnishing. It is far tougher to remove than tarnish.

    Hi,
I remember buying some unfinshed pieces by this company in the late 60s.
There was a store chain selling unfinished furniture. I bought a small three drawer dresser piece, stenciled it and used it on my front porch for 8 or 9 years. It sold at a consigniment shop I had it marked 50 bucks. A woman offered the owner 300 since it was too expensive at 5000. He sold it. She was convinced it was a Norwegian 19th century piece. How could anyone think it was from Norway with a masonite backing saying Finland?

Definetly not 19th century. About what should I expect on a piece like this to resale at? I have no clue. I'm sure I can get a profit out of the $40 I spent it.

I bought this ring at a well attended and competitive auction today for $3...It looked very nice to me and I suspected it was gold. Sure enough, 10k (tested) and with a huge amethyst of about 15 carats. It really is fabulous. Does anyone have any thoughts on how old it is? It is unmarked. The dragons are wild. It is very small, size 3!
