I don't believe this is Saint Francis.

It won't be St. Francis of Assisi because his attributes are: Franciscan habit, birds, stigmata, crucifix, book and skull. Your figure wears a mitre which is worn by bishops. (St. Francis was a friar.)

I agree, not Francis. This is a bishop who founded a church or an order (not Franciscans). There were several, I don't have time to look now, off to eat.

He was actually the first one I thought of.:hilarious: He is a Belgian saint, so familiar to me. But I thought nah, not really known outside the Low Countries.

Next time I'll say the first thing that comes into my mind.;) Or maybe not.:muted:

Yours could still be one of the other founding bishops though.:sorry:

Many saints are holding a church in the Catholic iconography, the usual suspects though are St. Paul or St. Peter, founders of the church. He is wearing a mitre so I would say St. Peter, the first bishop of Rome.

Or even St. Thomas a Becket possibly, murdered in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170. ?

Quite agree with Komo, it does look quite modern.

    Another zombie post?

As has been said, the mitre, cope and pastoral staff/crozier identify him as a bishop, but without more attributes it may be difficult to identify which Bishop is depicted. I believe the model of the church that such figures hold should resemble the actual church they founded/funded. The churches held by St. Ghislain and St. Willibrord are different in style.

Sometimes they resembled the church they founded, sometimes it was a generic church building.
