Featured Another ring for opinion

Good evening,

Here is another ring for inspection. Unmarked, buttery gold and 3.5g in weight.

The style from my research could have several possibilities. The turquoise inlay is sadly incomplete.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

 

Beautiful, Will. I think it is an antique Tibetan ring, pretty rare.
Is it gold or is it brass?

 

I would say its gold, the crud on the reverse comes off. I need to give it a proper clean.

Very interesting the Tibetan idea. It is a pity the turquoise isn't complete.

 

It looks like the original stone was lost and someone crudely patched in turquoise bits with some black glue

 

Some Himalayan jewellery has turquoise chips set in resin.

 

You will have to have it tested to know for sure

 

But if the setting is expensive gold, wouldn't you think a better piece of turquoise would have been used by the jeweler?

The turquoise is probably not Tibetan turquoise, which is generally much more green. So it would have been imported, and expensive.
Still assuming it is Tibetan, this ring would have been a rural piece, made in a rough, mountainous country where trade goods like replacement stones didn't always reach the rural areas.
Jewellery made in Tibetan towns, where imported goods were more readily available, is much more sophisticated.

 

I have a ring made the same way with a red glass center. I don't think mine is precious metal though, probably a souvenir piece. Same crude construction.

I think I need to. I have had another possible lead on this ring. Will update if I get some more concrete info.
