Two Indonesian wayang puppets I recently acquired. Both made of pierced and painted rawhide. The ogre fellow is supported on a wooden stick, the lady on a stick made of horn. I am hoping someone (Any Jewelry?) might be able to tell me their more specific origin (Java? Bali?), their possible age, and the characters represented.
Thank you very much. No problem, we try to help new members. You did a great job on photos, usually that’s the biggest problem people have. Very interesting pieces.

Looking more closely at the "ogre fellow" in my photos, I noticed he might actually be female ( a little saggy). Rangda, perhaps?

I’m not familiar enough with this subject, but it does look female, I googled Ragngda, looks similar to me, but AnyJewlery should be along. She’s on Dutch time, so will be a bit. ;) :hilarious:.

You are absolutely right, the first one is Rangda.
The beautiful 10th century Javanese widowed queen Mahendradatta got a very rough deal when her story reached Bali. She was equated with the Hindu Goddess Kali and they turned her into a fiery monster.
As a descendant of Mahendradatta I should sue the Balinese.:D
Her feet should be horizontal, but that is difficult with that nice stand.

The second puppet also looks Balinese to me. I know more about Javanese wayang, but I can say that she is wearing the jewellery of the aristocracy.
She is probably a character from a specific Balinese story.

They are not new, but I don’t have enough experience with Balinese wayang kulit puppets to tell you exactly how old they are. They are antique, but there are many years between new and antique....
Balinese wayang kulit puppets are more compact than Javanese and Madurese. They are also less decorated and have less frilly perforations. All in all more sturdy and durable than the elegant but delicate Java/Madura puppets. They also use different paints, and I don't know what the wear is like on those.

Thank you very much, Any Jewelry.
There is not a lot of wear on either puppet - some surface scuffing and loss of paint. Fortunately no major losses in the delicate details (fingers, toes, flames). That is interesting about the "ground line" for the Rangda - she would be difficult to mount in that orientation. I am still deciding whether these go for resale or into the "permanent collection". They are rather nice, and now I know a bit more about them.

Oops, I meant to put not antique.:sorry: But you probably already gathered that from the rest of the text.

Thanks for the clarification - not a problem. They are in too good condition to be really old. But I still like them.
