VERY unusual Antique...

Hello and thank you for allowing me to join your wonderful and knowledgeable group...I hope that this post was executed correctly ?

I have a vanity from around the 1860's that has stumped all who have seen it, from antique experts, appraisers and numerous antique groups with people from all over the world. I am desperate to find out something about this piece, as I truly need to sell this to raise some money...I bought it at an antique auction over 35 years ago and have never known a thing about it or why someone would carve a ladies vanity with horns on it ? If anyone is able to help me out, with any information, I would be not only grateful, but thrilled to *finally* know something about this. It appears to be shiny, in the photos, but I had just sprayed it down with lemon oil, as it had been sitting in the loft for quite sometime...My son said he would drive it to wherever it's new home was. Thank you for your time and BTW, I was told by the appraiser and another antique expert that this is definetly a one of a kind piece ?

My first, non-expert, thought, is that it is not a vanity. Maybe a table for a front hall, a place to check your appearance before going out the front door? As you say, the look is not feminine, more for a big game hunter sensibility. How deep is it? And Welcome!

I photographed the last pic to show that the top piece is completely removable. The top piece consisting of the mirror, two drawers and the horns...

Are the horns made of wood or are they something else?

I think hall table/stand, and I also think Anglo Indian Colonial.

 

No the horns are either horns or tusks...Do those two words mean the same thing ???

 

Basically nothing, actually said I needed to find an expert in furniture...

 

no...tusks are from the mouth
horns are from the head
tusks are like teeth
horns are like finger nails....

 

I know this sounds truly ignorant, but I don't remember what this piece cost, as that was over 35 years ago and I bought quite a few items. I have searched for the literature, which I did save, from that auction and have not found it, yet...

 

(-; OK so...The difference is like the devil with braces or a horned toad w/ a long tongue, so to speak...
