I love really old books, especially worn ones, which I buy at estate or garage sales for decorative purposes. I have just a few. A while back, can't remember where, I bought a bible - New Testament, that I placed in my bedroom. Had forgotten about it, until recently. I've included pictures below (it is fairly small about 8 inches long and five in width - best guess). Names of family members were included, date of birth included. Made me sad to think this belonged to a family, and somewhere through the years, a family member parted with it. I really believe treasures like these should be passed down the family. I tried to research the family but I am no genealogy expert and pretty much gave up. Just wanted to share with you all.

Front cover has "British and Foreign Bible Society."

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Are you located in the UK? Since the Bible was published in Great Britain there is a possibility that the family was British. Of course they could also be from the U.S., Canada, Australia, or other English-speaking countries.

I have a Rice ancestral line (that was originally Royce; descendants of Robert Royce of Connecticut). I've done a little looking in a book that I have and online, haven't found anything. There is also in the U.S. a large and active group of descendants of Edmund Rice, another early immigrant. Just a lot of possibilities, and the name is fairly common. Maybe somebody with more resources can help.

I did a little research ... There was an Ann Rice born in 1819 and died in 1877 living with Samuel Rice and children Charlotte, Abigail James and Keziah in the 1871 English census. Samuel was a farm worker in the town of Mellis. (Mellis is a small village in Suffolk, England. It has the largest area of unfenced common land in England. Oliver Cromwell exercised his troops in Mellis) This link might not work if you do not have an ancestry account...

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. Since I bought the Bible in Texas, I never thought it came from the UK. It was only yesterday that I discovered title on from cover.

Maybe one of the family members immigrated into the U.S. That's usually how things like that happen.

I seem to recall that the B&FBS gave out bibles to sailors and passengers on emigrant ships. That may be why it ended up across the pond. They were and still are a missionary society.

Interesting you say that. I think I bought that bible at an estate sale of a veteran. It's all coming back to me
