    Welcome, Caroline.

Looks to me (from the picture of the underside) that the boards making up the current top were recycled from something else. All 3 appear to be of different widths, the grain is not straight and doesn't match, the one on the left in the picture even seems to still have bark from the tree it was cut from. The stenciled letters and numbers suggest those boards were previously part of a crate or some such. Someone's slap dash home project?

    S. M & co is a shipping company. Maybe this was from a shipping crate.

Ah, yes. In support of my theory? Just because that one showed up doesn't mean it was the only "S M & Co" in the world, but given the African location, it might explain the "exotic wood" look to the grain.

The packing crate furniture industry began with This End Up furniture company in the 80s. They made durable furniture from old packing crates but soon moved on to using new materials to meet demand. The idea lingered and we have now come full circle with many companies now making shabby/industrial furniture from recycled and/or rustic materials. Really can't see well enough from the picture but I believe this to be a modern production piece beyond the capabilities of most DIYers. Based on the materials, would not be surprised to find this to be an Asian import. Also would not be surprised if the markings on the bottom are not the company name and model number, intentionally stamped to have an industrial look.

Gee Wiz, I am glad I am stuck in the 17th-18th century furniture wise, much easier in so many ways.
