    I found this very similar one on Ruby Lane - sold. Makes me think they might both be copies of a known portrait?

    Ummm, just out of curiosity - where did the description of the item come from?

    JMHO.
    I don't trust that item. easily opened at the back for changing the insert; the "corals" don't fit into the mounts.

    Yep! Those are usually Italian and surely not 18th century but mid 20th at the earliest:rolleyes:

    That auction house is sans clue. That damn back alone says mid 20th. If it's on ivory, they're also breaking the law.

    Not sure on the dating but always assumed this to be Italian.

    I suspect that my quest to identify the signature on the copy will bear no fruit. It does seem illegible but others are more creative and resourceful than I.

    If it's post 1947, it isn't legal. Rightly.

    That whole description would get them in deep doo doo in the UK.

    Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

    God forbid they give a better resolution.....I couldn’t improve it much....just sharpened a wee bit.....would love to know what it says above!
    ALSO....it just says “on bone”, so it ‘might’ not be ivory??

    Daniel, it is lovely, but as the others said, the description is ludicrous.

    The crimped mounts of the corals are a traditional type of setting btw, seen a lot in European folk jewellery. Those settings are always 'too wide', and crimped (pushed in at regular intervals) to hold the stone in place.
    Idiots!:banghead::banghead::banghead:
    In the EU too.

    The frame and the back plate could have been made by two different manufacturers, and assembled by a third maker to finish the piece.
