    Hi M,
I could be wrong, but I thought these pots were used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to boil and reduce leaves, roots and plants. As you have to boil the contents for some time (as long as an hour), the water can boil over and cause the stains you see down the sides and underneath. Your pot would have been for a lighter "tea" mixture and strained into cups. The other pot I posted below is for larger and stronger herbs and plants and is similar to the one I have at home. The smell while reducing these herbs is often overpowering, but the health benefits often incredibly successful. We have many large and successful TCM stores and dispensaries in Sydney and TCM practice is a growing alternative health field.
