    Greetings,

I am seeking info on this chest. I am hoping one of you can explain the stamp on the back and give me some background on the chest. I'd appreciate any info you can offer.

Dont know what the numbers mean, but thats the remains of an art deco dresser. The handles might be bakelite, wich would be more valuable than the dresser itself.

Thanks johnnycb09. I have had this dresser for many years, and I was thinking of selling it or having it refinished and keeping it.

Yes, Art Deco = has a European look to it - secondary wood on drawers (sides) looks like it may be oak, which is often seen on English furniture.

Thanks Drew. The chest was my grandfather's, and there was/is a matching dresser that some other family member probably has. My grandparents probably purchased this in New York City, but I am not sure if they purchased it new or used.

As long as I've seen it, it has had no feet. I really don't think it was built with feet, but I'll empty the drawers and lift it to see just to be sure.

Looks like the top portion of an old highboy, but the bottom couple of large "blanket drawers" with the feet on the bottom of it is gone? Could this be a possibility?

Very unusual. It has a German look to it, maybe it was made by a German cabinetmaker in the US?

What would something like this cost to get restored?

Original finish is in fine shape, so I wouldn’t mess with it. Clean with a damp rag then wax polish is all the finish needs. You’re missing a couple drawer pulls and a base of some kind. Matching pulls will be hard to find, but you can use different pulls on the bottom drawers until you find a close match. Take a pic underneath to show if traces of missing base are still there. Getting someone to build a base or put on legs will be expensive so you’re best off doing it yourself.

Can't add much more to what others have said. Art deco circa 1930. Higher end piece with some gorgeous exotic wood veneers. Do believe English or European in origin. Marks on back are unique to maker so can not know what they mean. Not a lot of value in this condition unfortunately. Biggest issue in restoration would be replicating the missing molding on the left side. A simple riser or some kind of chunky feet would do to get it up off the floor a bit.

As Brad said the molding will be the hardest to match.
However, it's not that unusual a molding. You don't need a lot of it, only a few inches.
You may be able to find it in a specialty wood working catalog. You might be able to canabalize another piece of old furniture. Or maybe there is someone in your area who could mill a small piece for you.

I'm curious, as it stands now, how tall is it?

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

It's very attractive. It does look like it once had feet, or a base with feet. It will be interesting to see what you see underneath.

I located 2 of the 3 missing handles and washers.

    The height is 42.5 inches.

I will take a photo of the bottom and post it here for you to see.

    Is it 29 inches deep?
Ooops... I guess I’m asking myself. :hilarious:

It’s approximately 20” deep, 28.25” wide at the top and 41.25” wide at the bottom.
