Please help with chair - hand carved? Age?

Sorry about the dirt. Is this hand carved? Any clues to the age?

Late 19th C, by the look of it. Might be mid 19th: can you photo the castors, please? Hand carved boudoir chair.

 

The fabric looks to be added in the 1950's or 60's.....
that trim was all over my folks living room furniture.

 

Thanks ownedbybear. We're having a snow storm and this is out in the barn. I probably won't be able to get out there until tomorrow after the plow clears the way. I will post a picture as soon as I can.

Thanks Komokwa, are you saying that this trim wasn't used on furniture back then? Do you know when this was "invented?

 

I am not saying that yours is indeed this old, but it looks like they did use trim that looked like yours.

what I meant to say......& I'm just spitballing ....is that the fabric looks to me to be 1960's , & that trim was very popular in those days....so I would think that the older chair was reupholstered around then.
I have a similar chair...not as old or ornate.....that has the same trim....albeit reupholstered with ultrasuede .

Komokwa, it could have been reupholstered. Those photographs were taken with my cell phone. When I go back in I will bring my camera and get more details. As you can tell, this thing was stored away for years even before I received it.

Unfortunately, the snow turned to rain but it's going to turn back to snow which, will make shoveling this mess VERY heavy.

 

Lovely balloon back gentleman's arm chair with casters. That crest as well as the arms may be hand carved. I also think latter half of 19th century like 1860s-1890s.

This chair has a fauteuil flavor with those straight legs and ornate arm carvings also. Possibly a Victorian fauteuil??

Mill, believe the carvings on the arms and legs are of acanthus leaves.

That trim is called gimp and has been used for years and years. It all depends if it is cotton/silk or polyester. Yours has a sheen which looks newer to me but it is hard to tell from photos. It is one of the few French style chairs that I like. Mine had a grey white wash on the wood and a pale grey silk fabric.

Yup. Gimp is what we made things out of at camp.

We call it gimp but we also have the flat plastic gimp. We used the plastic gimp to make bracelets and necklaces to hold our roller skate keys. Remember those?

 

I have no idea what to call fabric trim besides "fabric trim."
