Lucille, now I'm back to thinking it must be a pill crusher after all! :)

    intriguing

looks like something to do with balancing

the way the two side parts can be moved up and down

Although it looks like they could move, the two parts are fixed.

I'm moving away from the pill crusher idea because this just seems too colorful and odd in a way for something utilitarian like that.

    Thanks!

Hmmm.... good suggestion. A definite improvement over "suppository".

I Ebay searched "vintage telephone dialer" -- in fact, the shape is not too far off.

However none I could find had a necklace attached.

Also I think that metal ball and pointed piece might get annoyingly in the way if you were trying to dial with it.

Still thinking this might just be decorative, but open to suggestions.

Why wouldn't you pull the yellow part out and dial with it? Wouldn't destroy your nail job!:cat:

I was thinking the yellow part would be the dialer, because it is worn.

I was thinking about those dowsing charms....
Maybe it would be for you to use to Dial-A-Psychic! :hilarious:

I know I'm late to this party, but I would post this in the TOOLS section and see if it gets any response -- I'm really not convinced that it's meant to be worn.

But it's such an oddity, I haven't any idea what else it might be.

Since we're re-examining this. If you hold the 2 bobs out to either side & then pull, does anything move, or start to budge, when you do it? It looks to me like the 2 ends of the chain cross over inside the tube.

Nothing moves, those "bobs" and the chain are held fast. I know it looks like they should move in and out, but they don't. No movement at all.

The chain on this is quite feminine, not a man's chain. I can't picture it being for something other than possibly a telephone-dialer, something a woman would have used. Also could just be decorative as a woman's necklace, but admit it is mysterious.

The "bobs" are so distinct in appearance, I thought this would be an easy question, but alas! Also, for the most likely explanation, I'm not seeing "telephone dialers" on necklace like chains on Ebay. It's an oddity for sure.

Think the unfinished look of the blunt end of the part that can come out indicates it was not meant to be seen, that the piece was not designed to come out, so probably decorative rather than functional. Sure is a conversation starter.

I'm still waiting for my husband (who has more than a passing interest in plumb bobs -- I don't ask why) to be in the same room as I am when I'm thinking about this... once that happens, I'll at least be satisfied that I have done what I can.

:pompous: <-- if you knew my husband, that emoji would be hilarious

    And... I'm done.

Hubby took one look at the picture (with ZERO knowledge of any surrounding discussion) and said, "Isn't it a necklace?"
