    Hi all,

Found this chair in work and saved it from the tip. I've never seen anything like this before and all my google searches are returning g no results.

Can anyone shed any light on it for me please? Any info at all and potential value?

My wife wants to sand it down and turn it into a "shabby chic" look chair so need to save it from her to.

    Thanks in advance,

    James.

    Welcome to the forum, James.
Gorgeous chair, I'm so glad you saved it. It is a true antique.
Now, how to save it from your wife.;) First, tell her shabby chic is totally outdated. Then hide all the sandpaper, brushes, etc. Claim ownership of the chair, you're the one who saved it. Take her out for a nice meal to soften the blow.

Could we see more photos? Of the construction, the pictures/paintings?
And when you post them, could you click on 'full image' please?

Will upload them as full images.

Not exactly sure what you have there but don't let her touch it. Am thinking late 19th century English arts and crafts period.

@James Conrad, do you have any input to add on this unusual chair??? I like it and think it very interesting!!! James19852, in looking at the tall image in the back piece, do you think it's been painted or an inserted picture, as it kind of looks like ???? The smaller round one is harder to tell......still a pretty neat chair!!!

I think they are both the same technique, but can't tell yet if it is handpainted or printed. I love it, very unusual.

I honestly cant recall ever seeing a chair with picture panels like this. Most intriguing. Id guess its a hall chair of some sort, but Im with Brad on dating it.My first thought was 1870s,then I thought 1900 !

I think you have a Victorian Hall Chair. Mid 1800s.

I also think that maybe the back became loose and the back panel was added by a good crafts person for repair and the woods are different. The print panel being added to hide the larger mismatched grain. Only my opinion.

I know I have seen chairs with that porthole back, but darn if I can find any, because I'm looking.

Heavens, keep your wife away from that. Do the panels feel cold to the touch? They may be painted/enamelled porcelain, I've seen inserts like that. Basically, a good quality tile. Yes, a hall chair, late 19th C. I think it's Scottish.

Take your wife to the local thrift and buy her another chair to "shabby chic". This one belongs to you.
(After all men are entitled to have a few things in the house;););))

@INH, that COULD be a siggy, but I'm more focused on that whole curved ill fitted side of the image going down the right side inset that makes me think it's a print......opinions still subject to change tho!!:D:D

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

Arts & Crafts is a good name....specially for a chair that looks to me like a bedroom night stand with a back placed on it !
I mean seriously.....that in no way looks like a seat !

It may be a printed tile. Shape looks fine.
