look once at the crest of New Bern and spot the difference :D.
Brienz would be the town for the swiss carvings, sold also to English tourists, and shown at the Great Exibiton in London in 1851. I doubt someone would have gone to the Black Forest region as a tourist in those early days, but as the whole Alberts and others were German it may well be.

You're right, due to intensive logging there was almost no Black Forest left to go to in the 19th century. The region was devastated.
What you see now is a result of planting of spruce in the late 19th century, like a mono-culture. Which is why the Black Forest is a bit boring, really. The original forest was mixed, just like any other forest in comparable circumstances in Europe.
To supplement their meagre income, the people of the Black Forest sold carvings to traders to be sold in places like nearby Baden Baden.
In the 19th century Baden Baden was called 'the Summer Capital of Europe', because most royalty went there for the healing properties of the baths. And to be seen, of course.

I'd rather say they went there for gambling. even the guy in Dostojewskis The Gambler went there. and for the loose women of course.
