Featured Antique Gun Cabinet - Age? Worth? New to forum

Do you have a theory yet ?

 

My original impression was this was not built for gun storage, rather it was a hodgepodge of components and mixed species of wood accumulated by one of the Iroquois employees who assembled what you now possess, the purpose of which will remain a mystery. The combination of functional components makes no logical sense, ie. why only six drawers and placed in an odd though balanced configuration and lots of wasted space. The original purpose seems obscure, probably a storage cabinet which the last owner modified to be a gun cabinet? The slotted component was obviously added by an inexperienced carpenter which I attribute to the rough radius relief cuts. Was it a gun cabinet? Who knows? However, the item is now a gun cabinet.

I think a cabinet maker / gun owner...made this for himself...or a commissioned work for a client....

Not that it isn't appealing in its own way, but to my eye, looks like someone went out to the barn and nailed together their own creation from bits & pieces of furniture, packing crates and other scrap wood, used hardware from Hoosier-type cabinets, and overall design, construction, even the carving on the crest and the slightly different applied elements an indication of amateur workmanship...

I can definitely see that being the case. It appears to be crudely made but that’s what I love about it. So does anyone have any idea on what a piece like this is worth ? Basically whatever someone is willing to pay ?

 

I forgot to mention one thing. Considering the marrying of different woods and components, the builder did credible work, IMO.

 

If this were my piece and without going over it with a fine toothed comb assuming the photos tell a true story of the article, I would ask $250.00 and consider offers.

Couldn't it have been designed for the gun stock (butt) to sit on that middle shelf? Or would that make the distance between the shelf and the barrel holders too close together??

 

the long thin drawers could be for extra barrels....or parts...or ammo..........

That is way too cool ! I would have had to have it for my Spanish American war goodies !!!
