Hi I’ve had numerous people looking at this item and nobody has given us a definitive answer. Most people say a letter opener but there is no edge on them to cut open a letter. They are also quite heavy Thank you so much What are these? by Lee2939 posted Mar 20, 2021 at 5:01 PM
Coincidentally, I just saw this image of a Victorian era hair pin posted on Twitter this morning. https://twitter.com/wikivictorian/status/1367882287556288512
@Lee2939 - Hello & welcome to the forum!! Are there any marks on either of these pieces? As they said above we need to know how long they are & how wide the top pieces are. My SWAG is some type of skewer but size will determine if it is olives in a martini or shishkabob on the grill. The marks will tell it what they are made of which also might point to their use. I wouldn't think sterling would be good on a grill but then again we have a pair of sterling silver needle-nose pliers here on the forum right now.
I use my silver meat skewer every time I roast a chicken. It cooks it quicker through the thighs but it does tarnish the skewer a bit. I don’t think I would use one on a BBQ though.
Hey Everyone, Thank you for all your replies! No markings on them at all and the head is 1 inch across and the total length is 7 inches. Thank you
Meat-skewer. For holding the meat in place on the serving board while carving. Also, for decoration. Or at least, that's always been my understanding of their function.
At worst, your hair will smell of roast beef, or your dinner will smell of scented shampoo. Win-win all around, I reckon!!
