I don't think this is cut from a larger board, the back stamp is well placed in the center. I don't know what all the white labels(?) are for?

It's a lovely painting, but I'm not sure it's older than the 1940s. Her eyes look a bit "off" to me, not well focused, and furry around the outside that's not makeup or shadow. There's not much else in content, no hand to hold the fan, really nothing more than the fan and some mis-highlighted brads to base the expertise on. It just doesn't look like the work of an expert artist to me.

I knew AJ would love it and it does look Spanish in origin, thanks AJ! The fan is painted beautifully and loosely - and this part of the painting "works" for me. Her hair is lovely too.

Which member would know about Spanish style clothing from the early to mid 1900s?

She appears to be wearing contemporary late 1800s/early 1900s clothing. Nothing particularly regionally or traditionally Spanish in style.

That said... The fan does have a Spanish theme, doesn't it? A bull and picador.

The labels are on the back of the other painting I found by the same canvas maker.

I think AJ's feel for it being Spanish was spot on, although even I didn't see the bull until you showed it, thanks, Deborah. It really is a lovely painting.

It is lovely. An example of Catalan Modernisme. Worth doing some research to identify artist.

I'd still be interested to know if anyone can read what's written across top of stretcher. May well be name of artist.

That's helpful. I thought I saw "Enrique" followed by "Ni____" but it's actually "Vi____." And what I thought was a date may well be an address.
