A painting I like and know nothing about. But maybe you do?

you find these genre paintings in all price ranges - when properly allocated - from 30 € without known signature up to 400 to 700 € with good and trustworthy provenance or at least with known location.
everything else is hogwash and jabberwocky, especially on platforms like ebay.de where everyone asks illusionary prices simply listing the "treasures" of Oma and Opa and hoping for the best.
furthermore there is the problen that these paintings - from old men with pipes and drinking beer with red noses to such landscapes were aiming to a social class that doesn't exist anymore; namely the people that were born on the countryside and either pressed into the industrialized cities by poverty or by marriage.

Indeed, it would be better if this was a known location.

Agreed. There is so much "stories" of made up "history" to go with much of it.

Ok, THANKS, I thought I saw an old man drinker with a red nose. By my way of viewing it, seeing this figure in the painting - lessened it - for me. Thanks for the explanation.

I think I'd not even like this painting if it were all cleaned up! ;):smuggrin::rolleyes:

Sorry, I don't mean anything bad by it, just that I found the painting offered along with this one which looks like it could be the same subject and artist and thought it might help with an ID. The listing doesn't offer more details or better photos.

Oh wow, It seems I missed a lot whilst waiting for the seller's reply.

Yes, there are actually two paintings. Of the same house as it seems. However as I liked the first one better and the pictures @say_it_slowly uploaded are even worse, I didn't include them in the original post.

The seller has answered today. Unfortunately she ignored most of my questions and requests. It's quite frustrating.
She made a picture of the back and wrote that the pictures have been in the family since 1934, when they were presented as a wedding gift to (I assume) her parents.

You know, I was thinking the same. If I do end up buying it maybe I'll just leave it as it is.

You're right. This is exacty why I asked you guys about it. I found this offer on ebay-kleinanzeigen. There was little to no information about the painting and the price seemed to have been chosen rather arbitrarily.

I think @Fid spoke of those petit bourgeois portraits found in great abundance on ebay and in antique stores in southern Germany. They typically depict a bearded man with a pipe or a beer jug. Nobody wants to buy them anymore, because to the modern middle class they seem primitive and kitsch.

Yah, her picture of the back is quite useless indeed.
