    Hello friends!

I wonder if this portrait is a real original or is it a print?
Who imagines it? Could it be a famous person or just an unknown person.

Original Oil on canvas I think, you can see the brush marks and paint clumps, says Dondo on the back Spanish for ‘where’ I can’t read the other word plus there’s the Barcelona stamp. There’s been some old canvas repairs.
Wait for others opinions though. I like it, she looks very relaxed!

It is beautiful, a very Spanish painting. Reminds me a bit of Goya paintings, but it is not by him or of the period.
It looks like it has been cut from a bigger painting, which is probably why the signature is missing.

There's something written across stretcher on back including date. (19xx which is what one would expect, early.) Faint but there.

I think it is a code. What looks like 19-- is 519.
    Dondo 519 H E?
There is a town called Dondo in Mozambique, and there is an ice cream parlor called Dondo in Kampen, the Netherlands. I don't think either has to do with the painting.:playful:

@Debora , could Dondo be an abbreviation, that you know of?

It does say dorado and it could well be referring to the frame as it means "golden" or "gilded."

Ah, that's from side of stretcher. Can you see what's written across top? Looks like "S. Enrique..." At end is "19xx" -- I think.

It appears to be a good quality, well framed early 20th century portrait of a lady. Don't know the connection with Bertrand but there was a family of wealthy textile industrialists in Barcelona by that name at the time. Stencil with address looks more like commercial name rather than client's and there is mention of a C. Bertrand, artist, floating around the internet but no further information.

Ah, it's not C. Bertrand. It's Bertrand y Cia. (Or whatever the Catalan equivalent is.) Company name. Makes sense.

Just checked. Catalans use Cia. too. Inc. in English.

This is a blah-blah translation from a Catalan but it confirms Bertrand y Cia. is the canvas maker. One of three working in Barcelona in the period apparently. Calle Puerta del Angel is the address.

"Specifically, in both cases, stamps have been found on the back of the fabric stamps of the store where it was purchased. And during the process of assembling the exhibition we could see that on many of the backs of the fabrics, there were printed stamps. Three types have been detected: the Bertrands and C.2, and the Weaver3, in two different periods and locations."
