Featured Famille Rose porcelain covered jar - Tea caddy? Tobacco jar? Old vs. newish?

I picked up this piece at an auction a while back & have recently unearthed it.

This piece is 4 1/4" tall & 3 3/8" across the top. The lid does not really fit & I am wondering if this is a marriage. If it is original then it is almost like there should be some type of rubber sealant or that the edge at the top of the jar should have been taller to keep it in place.

There is some type of red marks inside the lid & on the top edge of the jar.

I'll fitting lids are not uncommon. The way the orange flooring painting matches is good. The green curls are also stylistically very similar. There is some difference in the way the faces are painted, but parts were often painted by different workers. The palette matches very well. If it isn't original then someone found a very close match almost certainly from the same workshop at a similar time period.

Marks may be number/batching/lid fitting marks.

I noticed that there was a couple of minor differences in the people but the quality of the painting looked like it was older quality.

Forgot to mention age, sorry. I agree it looks 19th century, perhaps 3rd quarter. It wouldn't have had an insert in the lid.

I just got a ginger jar from about the same time this would have been made. My lid fits lousy as well. This thought just entered my head and it’s probably a stupid one but there is absolutely no way porcelain could expand in the most minute way, is there? My jar has an old cork stuck in it. I’m guessing with contraction and expansion of the cork the porcelain couldn’t have shifted in shape or size just ever so slightly enough to change how the lid fit? Seems obvious it would just crack but I don’t know. They say there’s no such thing as a stupid question but this one might be at least bordering on it.

BTW both pieces seem to match to me.

 

I would think once a piece of porcelain is totally cooled that there would be no way for it to get smaller either BWDIK.

You may want to start a new thread with that question to see if the more learned baked dirt folks have any thoughts about that matter.
