I’ve seen Cherry Bakelite beads discussed online but never seen them in real life. Do you think these look right for CB?
They are an amazing deep red colour and quite long around 45cm looped or 90cm laid out.
I’ve tested them with Bicarbonate of Soda and it comes off that brown colour. I then washed the bead in case it was nicotine and it still tests brown.
Restrung so may or may not be the original clasp.
    Any date suggestions please?
    Yay or Nay for Bakelite?
    Thanks for looking :)

This odd shaped one was in the same lot, also Bakelite I believe ( these were the only good bits in a lot of modern cheap Chinese stuff that exited as soon as it arrived!)

If the red ones are definitely not glass, I would say chances are good.

Get yourself some Maas cream. If you use a touch of that on a cotton bud, it turns yellow for bakelite. Also, do they feel heavy? Cold? Any bubbles under a loupe?

Cherry prystal bakelite almost without a doubt. They look like the ones my grandmother had. I had to restring those too; the original clasp was busted. I bet a damp q-tip with some baking soda and rubbed firmly brings up the stink as well as the brown. Just hold the bead close to your nose when you do it.

Not heard of that!. Ok, I’ll go google. They feel like a heavy plastic. Not glass heavy. Cool but not cold.Don’t know about bubbles, I’ll look in the good light in the morning!.

Does this clasp look about right for the beads?. How old do you think your GMs necklace was?

From the length, early to mid-30s. The original was a "hidden" clasp most likely, two halves the same color as the beads, with a clearish threaded plastic bit to screw the two pieces together. If the glue goes, that threaded piece often goes missing.
