Photo is too small, need closeups of the top details. From your photo it looks like a resin casting.

    Welcome on Antiquers:)
Hollyblue is right, for both her advices;)
Always post your pics by clicking full size after you upload them, more comfortable for seing details!
When enlarging your pic, I can see tiny blobs in the striated background design... this is the clue for casted resin, carved cinnabar never shows them:)

No, but many people are on phones, which makes it difficult to view the pictures.
If you are having trouble uploading, your pictures may be too big and need to be resized to 600x800.

    Welcome to the board.
We look forward to helping you if you can help us.

Cinnabar is a build up of lacquer over a long period of time and then hand carved.
Later the lacquer was applied to cardboard and then carved. The insides of these are usually painted black.

Yours is on brass with an enamel inside. It tells me it is a newer import item and most likely resin as has been pointed out.

If you are looking to buy this, do not buy it because someone is telling you it is old and rare. It is not a good investment.
If you like it, and will use it and it is a price point you are comfortable with, then buy it and enjoy it.

    Late to the party.:shame::)
It seems Mamayzo hasn't been back, but I just want to add one thing. I agree with all of the observations above, except that I've never seen or heard of cinnabar lacquer on cardboard.
Historically it was used on many materials, including bronze and brass-like alloys. As Asian Fever mentioned in another thread, lacquer on metal dates back to the Shang dynasty, which ruled in the second millenium BC. So the base being metal doesn't mean it is new. Other signs do point to it being recent, like it being resin.

I go from memory most of the time and will admit to not always having all my facts completely straight.
However, I have seen square boxes damaged on corners where the inside is indeed cardboard.

    https://www.realorrepro.com/article/Cinnabar
"Here are the basic steps in producing carved lacquer. First, a rough form of the final shape is prepared to receive the lacquer. Lacquer can be applied to wood, metal, porcelain, paper, fabric or a wire frame."
