Featured early Wedgewood Bowl ...one of my favorites

I have had this for about ten years sitting in the middle of my dining room table. But I really don't know that much about it. In the sixth image you can easily see the illustrators number...but it was next to impossible to get the wedgwood symbol pressed into the mold. From what I could tell below the symbol is a three letter code that ends in A which dates it to 1872. But I am not sure....It looks like it has a raised mold number...but again very hard to photograph...the second to the last photo is one I tried to enhance the image.

 

Quincy, that's quite a bowl! I LOVE those fish!

Wish I could read the impressed mark, but it's just a blur to me. Maybe someone else can do better at it.

p.s. There is no second "e" in Wedgwood.

 

I am not sure how to edit a title...I corrected the spelling mistake within the body of the text....As a side note I still have my 7th grade report card from an English teacher that states "Your son's last five spelling tests do not add up to 100...."

 

That's a registry number, bedarned if I can read it unfortunately. They started using those in 1883 or so.

I read the number as Rd27243 which would be 1885-6.

 

that date makes sense because they added England to Wedgwood in 1891 so we know it is before that. Any information on artist...or style or how many were made? Would it show in a catalog? Anyone seen something similar?

 

It’s a seafood salad bowl from the “Argenta” range and would originally have had serving implements like the attached photo of another Wedgwood salad bowl. Must be quite a rare pattern.

Thank you all.... I know a lot more about my salad bowl now. Any ideas on finding the servers. Would this bowl be listed in a catalog?, Is the registry number a registry for the pattern or for the piece itself? Are their places to learn about artists number "c 2638"? Does Wedgwood reply to inquiry?

 

You could try the Wedgwood Museum, that's perhaps your best bet. Artists aren't well documented, unlike Doulton ones.

 

Quincy: I do sympathize with your spelling problem! I vividly recall my fifth grade teacher, returning my math workbook with a terse note at the top,"Tell your father he got one wrong!"

Registered numbers are a register of the design to prevent other companies reproducing it. The C number probably isn’t the artist but the pattern number. You may be able to find out more here http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/...research-guides/registered-designs-1839-1991/
