It sounds like hardened museum putty. Maybe the coin was mounted with others in a framed display? You would not want to rely on the pressure of the glass to keep coin from sliding down but would not want to use serious glue either.

 

Yes, I think you might be right. I tried the WD-40 and it had no affect. I have now put the coin in Xylene to see if that might work. The funny thing is the reverse side that has the adhesive/putty on it is in nice condition (VF) and the obverse side is badly worn. As a last resort I might have to use baking soda.

 

Yes, I've been a member over there for a few years now. And cleaning coins is considered taboo with most collectors, but I'm not a purist. Some coins do look better when cleaned.

 

The stuff in that bowl looks awfully like the remains of Oasis. It's godawful to get off.

I can not remember what I soaked it in, I think it mineral spirits. After a nights rest it just wiped off and was gone.

JMHO. into the deep freezer with it. then chip it off with a piece of wood or a piece of sharpened copper.

 

I'd forgotten the freezer trick, it's a good one.
