Butter dish? Cheese Dome?

My mother in law has this. I don't know where she got it. She said she thinks it's a butter dish or a cheese dome which I would agree but I believe it is missing the bottom piece. She said it is really heavy. She sent me these pictures which aren't the best and asked what I thought. I have looked around but I really don't know. I don't think it is depression glass which is what I collect. It looks kind of thick to me. I asked if she thought it might be crystal but she doesn't know. Has anyone seen this pattern before? Sorry it is kind of hard to see. I did't take these pictures. Thanks in advance for any help you may have.

I've looked at this several times.
I don't think it is American.

 

I have looked all over trying to match the pattern and haven't found anything similar. There aren't any marks on it.

Shouldn't it have a bottom? Not to sound dumb cause I am not any kind of expert but I have not personally seen a butter dish or cheese dome that didn't have some sort of bottom piece either wood or glass. I also haven't seen as many square ones as round, oval, and rectangular.

I think it is interesting mainly cause I just can't find any info on it.

The open edges are smooth. She said it was cloudy but she didn't notice any prism effect. It has some weight to it.

It is far to heavy and small for butter/cheese. I think it is a "dust cover" for a small beautiful object de arte. That is what I would use it for. I have a plain large one that covered a wax and human hair sculpture.

I would not discount butter dish without it's base.
