Featured Hello all! Necklace, disc beads...what are they?

Hello all...(only cost 50p so whatever it is so don't worry about my tender feels!)

Got this yesterday, no idea what it is...could it be dyed bone? It has little holes that look organic.
It has a sterling clasp,marked 925.
It's choker length if that helps.
Not plastic , is cold to the touch x

Yup, dyed sponge coral.

 

It looks like coral to me too. I see this type used in Zuni carvings & usually called 'apple coral'. Probably there are a number of informal names for it. OBB got in while I was typing. I endorse.

I'm with obb, dyed sponge coral, probably from China.
Unlike precious coral, sponge coral is not a gemstone. It is also not endangered and considered by some a cheap alternative to precious coral. It is found in the South China Sea.

 

I haven't seen it used much recently; they're protecting it a bit now, if informally.

 

They still sell a lot of sponge coral, but most of it is pressed to resemble precious coral. This dyed porous coral was seen a lot from ca late 40s-2000.
