looks to be original cane. Assembled with wooden pegs.

Any thoughts on when or where it might have come from?

Do you think it’s worth anything? Any suggestions on how to get the seat repaired?

No, Traditional New England ladder back chair with rush seat. I doubt the rush had to be imported from Italy.

Btw, I was just reading an article that in 80s USA imported 100 million chairs from Yugoslavia.

Simple, oak dining chairs. I have two. Found them in my back alley. Imagine my shock to find chairs from my birth place here in Phoenix. I finished them, put cleat coat. They will last forever. 3BDFB84E-0958-4507-91DD-539DC2C0C077.jpeg 8AFE0254-9205-46CB-8E52-894095E7B1E1.jpeg I know they are not much but have emotional connection. Some other imports were folding kind.

OP's chair looks to be a New England US 19th century ladder back chair. With rope seating, rather than rush or cane. Rope seating was fairly common in mid 20th century (used on scandinavian furniture), which is probably when the older original rush was replaced. Although fairly old, these are so common in new england and demand so small that individual side chairs like this have very little value. Not worth paying someone else to replace the seat for you, but you can buy a roll of original rush and repair it yourself to make it more authentic looking if you have the time and interest.

Branka's chairs are quite different (windsor style) and a century younger, made in mid 20th century or later. Yugoslavia was a major producer and exporter of wood furniture in that time period.
