My first post in this part of the forums! Hi everyone

    Saw these today for sale!
What dyou think, there is some damage but are they worth going for?

I’d love to buy a good piece of embroidery. Just need advice and some more knowledgable reassurance about these. Are they 18th Century and are they high quality.

    Thanks for any help

They seem naive to me, in the same class as samplers, but that's all I've got.

Welcome to this part of the forum Nathan.
They seem to be a version of crewel stitch, a needlework skill that is being practiced even today. If you are basing assumptions of age on the staining of fabric, that could simply be the result of poor storage conditions.

The crewel does not look well done. You can find better.

How are you dating them as 18th century?

I dont know fabrics at all,but to me these look like some sort of thing a granny whipped up and framed, possibly in the 20s-30s.

I'm seeing stamped embroidery kit work from some time or other. They're old, but not 18th century. This is cotton embroidery floss and it's called "long stitch".

Welcome to the forum, Nathan! Just a hint for future queries. It's always helpful to post photographs of the work and its frame, both front and back. Very often the frame will be contemporary to the work and help in dating. Do know that, unless something is rare, condition matters. Water damage, for instance, will impact both purchase and resale value. Finally, an internet image search for 19th century embroidered panels of birds will bring up examples for comparison. As a general rule, the older a decorative object is the more detailed the execution.

The auction house identified them as 18th Century. Likely due to the frames. And the faded colour of the material.

I had to crop a lot of the image to fit the image file size limit here. Thanks anyway the water damage is making me want to give them a miss

I would give them a miss, I don't see any quality there and the staining would really bother you after a while.

I think they would sell at something like £80 really. But I’d have to repair the frames and yeh the damage would put people off big style. The age is the only redeeming feature
