We used to call those Coping saws in jewelry. Is there a difference?

 

I forgot that my red one has the cutouts like your blue one. I took pictures of both sides of each, since each side is painted differently. Ignore the glue on the base of the black one. I did a bit of a clumsy repair, since the base cannot be seen where I display it.

 

My ma used fans, and so do I. I'm rather proud that I can do the one handed snap open and close thing. I treasure Ma's late 18th C ivory one: she used it, but it's too fragile, really. I bought a gorgeous hand made lace one on Cyprus.

 

Coping saw blades are heavier (and look like saw blades):

 

Would the ornamentation on some old houses I always heard called fret work actually have been done with one of the other types of saws?

 

"Gingerbread" I've heard that called, and work of that magnitude would overwhelm a fret saw.

But you know how it goes... sometimes common usage is less than precise.

Don't want to take this thread too far off track. Fans are interesting and, as with so much else, there are jaw-dropping examples out there.

My fret saw post was just an expression of my how-do-they-do-that thinking. Seldom enough that I have a clue.

I think my grandmother had one of the plastic ones or maybe it was a different material?

They are all fan-tastic.

 

I rescued these two recently - a buck for the pair. The rose one is hand painted and while the paint is perfect the ribbon that held it just plain gone. The brown one appears machine cut and originally had brown fabric that's pretty well shot. The brown one I rescued from a trash can.

This is a fan I have for sale displayed with some perfume bottles, it has celluloid ribs and the birds are painted

It looks large enough to be a fire screen! Not one of those little hide-it-in-your-hand jobs. Beautiful.

 

Remember when Madonna did the music awards show and she and all the dancers used fans as part of their movements?

I was going to ask how you display them...they must be very delicate. Did you frame them yourself?
I have many collections but this isn't one. I just pick them up if I find them. I love yours...they are so delicate! Must be hard to look after!
