Judith Leiber bag: Any Info appreciated

I hope you don't mind if I post one more query regarding: I don't think this bag has been cleaned for many many years. Does anyone have a suggestion for cleaning the leather. I don't want to ruin it in my attempt to clean it

Ummm, last I checked, 1stDibs charged around $500. a month and they had a vetting process...

If you intend to resell it, my advice is don't clean it. Let the new buyer use her favorite resource. She may wish to send it back to Judith Leiber which, like many luxury brands, has its own repair service. (Of course, you'll want to disclose uncleaned condition in your offering.)

One reason that eBay bag is getting so much attention is... The brand was only established in 1963. It appears to be from a very early collection. (But my pet peeve... Well, one of them... Sellers pricing something in the 4 figures and then charging additional for shipping. Cheeky. Or is greedy the better word?)

Knowing the history of this bag, I believe it is from the 1960s, so thank you very much for telling me the brand started in 1963 . Several months ago, to find out about the bag's date, I emailed the Judith Leiber company, but they said they could not provide any information and referred me to Leiber Museum which never replied back to my query. Perhaps, I did not have the correct contact information. Do you happen to know if the Leiber company would tell people around when a vintage bag was made? If so, do you have any contact information. I wonder how the person selling the bag in your previous post knows it is from an early collection.

 

I appreciate your advice and will not clean it. The information about Leiber's bag cleaning and repair service is very useful.

Sorry that I didn’t see this earlier. IMO your bag is 60s and will be of no interest to the company. She’s gone and Hilfiger owns it. It’s worth a few hundred at best and realistically probably less. No question in my mind that ebay is really the only viable place to sell it.

 

I would clean it if listing. Never polish. Just a neutral cleaner for leather from your local cobbler/shoemaker. You can vacuum out the interior if needed.

Thank you for taking the time to reply and provide such useful information. I was thinking this bag might be of particular interest since the company started in 1963 and this bag is from the 60s. I also have not seen another one like it.

 

I understand and you should certainly research and pursue selling in a manner that works for you. If Leiber were still alive and the company hadn’t been sold to Hilfiger I’d agree that there could be some historic interest but I can’t see that happening. Know that’s just my personal opinion.

Meanwhile it will only take you a few minutes to submit pictures to the company and see if there’s any interest. If not, I still think ebay is the only realistic option.

I did submit pictures to the company and ask for any information they might have about the bag so I would have a better idea of its manufacturing date and its value. The company referred me to the Leiber museum, and I never heard back. I agree ebay sounds good.

 

Sorry but that’s no surprise. Just sell it on ebay. Play up that it’s a Rare Vintage 1960s Judith Leiber Black Leather Purse Handbag. I honestly think your best bet will be a stylist, wardrobe prop person, etc. Leiber collectors go after the skins, stones and crystals. Good luck with it.
