Chinese Goddess of Mercy, Quan Yin, Statue

Greetings.

My aunt passed away about a year ago and she had quite an art collection. She was wealthy and she traveled around the world with her husband collecting art. My family is struggling to determine values.

The statue in question is a 32" tall ivory tusk of the Chinese Goddess of Mercy, Quan Yin, I believe. It has what I believe to be a naturally occurring vertical crack on the front but not easy to see. This is the most intricate carving I have ever witnessed firsthand. My family and I wish to know what value it holds. We believe it was purchased directly from China in the late sixties.

Value will depend on where u are and what you want to do with it.....

 

The mark on the bottom reads Mingda (Ming Dynasty), which of course it isn't and almost certainly means it is 20th century. Looking at the box too there is a slight possibility it was new, or newish when acquired, which could be problematic as this dates post the ivory ban.

Due to new laws banning the sale of antique ivory in Europe being discussed some people have been trying to sell their items before any laws are passed. This has lead to a few pieces which are later than the ivory ban coming up for sale and they have been picked up at auction and seized.

If it were mine I would be taking it to an ivory expert to get it dated - make sure you get paperwork to cover yourself.

The statute is located in central canada, my aunt brought it back from china in the mid to late sixties, i believe.

I don't like trophies from animals as that is an abomination in my opinion, but what is done can't be undone and to just toss this out or destroy them like I have read online is another crime in my opinion as that animal died utterly for nothing.

According to my mother who claims to have the paperwork, it was appraised at 17,000CAD. Just found this out. Somehow, I can't see this.

the paperwork could shed more light on the subject....and make the value more understandable..
I was in a Chinese shop...high end mall, in Montreal...and behind the counter was something like this...24 inches....& they were asking 8,000.....in 1995....
