Featured Looking for information on a Berkey and Gay dining set

I’m new to this site and I am hoping that there is someone out there that can help me with my dining set. It’s is a set made for Berkey and Gay 75th anniversary by William Kleaver and Leonard Fuller. The name is The Chancery. It has a pedestal dining table with 4 leaves, 2 jumbo knife boxes with stands, serpentine side board and a half moon table that opens up for extra seating. I also have to arm chairs and six side chairs. And the China cabinet as well. It’s beautiful and I have the complete set. I’m going to attach some pictures. I am wanting to know how many were made and what the value might be. I have had an appraiser trying to get its value for over a year. Thanks for any and all help. Erin

 

Beautiful! Looks like you've done your homework on this. The set was produced in 1928.

Berkey & Gay are long gone, but there is still a big furniture presence in Grand Rapids, including - I believe - a museum. I'd contact them to see if you can get a current value on the set.

 

the Grand Rapids Public Museum is a great resource for the furniture produced there. They have many old catalogs, ads, and photos from the great furniture companies that operated there. Here's what I saw on The Chancery doing a quick search of their records.

 

How many were made is irrelevant to value today. Not sure why a competant appraiser would not be able to provide you with value. Why do you need the value? Insurance value is way different than what you might get if hoping to sell. If looking to sell, contacting a quality auction house might be the best route for this. I would think an insurance value would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $10K.

 

I just like to know all about such beautiful things. Stuff like how many were made. As they were all hand carved. So it makes me curious about how many could they have made. And I am beginning to think the gal I hired to appraise it might actually suck at her job. I’m not selling it but I do want it insured. I just love to research old and rare things.
