Saw this in a box today at auction. When dyou think it’s from?

The wear on it looks so cool, I’d want it as a paperweight more than anything. Thanks for any help

Not the best photo, was in a bit of a rush. It has all the marks still

You've a VR mark in the centre, so 19th C seems likely. Have a look on oldcopper.org

It also says 4lb above the upside down VR mark.
Not saying it is not original but these used to be heavily counterfeited in the 70`s.

I dealt with a guy 40 years ago who was churning these out from a bedsit along with the scales using fake punches, he went to jail.
It was a serious offence back then under the weights and measures act.

I know a bloke who "adds" engravings to bits of brass and copper and sells them at car boot sales. One day, Old Bill wil get him.

Sounds like I should know but what does VR stand for, something to do with Victoria.

Also that’s well put me off it Davey haha . I won’t go for it anyway it’s in a large box and I don’t really want to deal with the other junk (junk to me) I’ll keep an he out for fakes though

I was assuming the CM referred to the monarch

Nope. Definitely not the monarch. We use R - Rex/Regina to indicate the monarch. The CM and crown is the maker. The VR bit is Victoria Regina.

If I remember rightly it was Customs & Excise that finally dealt with it, they had extreme powers anything affecting revenue got stamped on.
If we searched a place we had to put things back as they were, customs could rip a place to bits and walk away.

Sorry I haven’t been on. Yes it was a Victorian weight deduced by the guys here  .

I think it looks beautiful I’ll just wait till one pops up for a few pounds or in a box I want
