Thank you Bronwen. All I have is a hand-written price tag and the receipt from Value Village that only identifies it as "Accessories Jewelry." I was thinking of having the date printed on a photo of the necklace with myself, but that's not really proof since it can be edited. I even called a local photo lab to see if they print the date on the back of 35mm film prints and was told they don't do that anymore. Maybe I could go to a notary public and have a photo notarized?

It is officially listed as endangered. It is not on the CITES list, but it is included in the international Bern Convention (nature conservation, legally binding), and it is on the EU Habitats Directive. All major Med red countries are members of the EU.
Italy still exploits some coral reefs, but with only a fraction of the harvest of say the 70s. Which is why even Italy has started to recycle old jewellery (not necessarily antique).

I don't think Joan has anything to worry about, though. The Eu Directive is strictly about protecting the environment, not about old an antique coral. Unlike ivory there is no poaching.

You could. Or, like a hostage, a photo of the coral on an obviously new newspaper showing the date. Or a notarized photo with the newspaper...

Better ideas than mine -- thanks.

Thanks for the correction. I was thinking of CITES & the US law.

But I prefer your idea of photographing the necklace on a dated newspaper than with myself.

That's why it is so nice to have an international forum, we learn things from each other we might never have known otherwise.:)
