Guys any idea about this style

Looks like it might be blue Staffordshire transferware. Hard to tell much more without a mark.

Hey by the way there is no mark observed in the back and how did you;ll directly identified it as staffordshire @dgbjwc ??

 

Owned can probably answer that question better than me. Owned and others helped educate me in what to look for. I recognized the general style: like the color, the border, the nature of the center scene, the rim pattern, the shape, the bottom treatment. I also noticed right away it wasn't hand painted. As far as I could tell everything added up to Staffordshire. You develop a bit of eye once you see it often enough.

Yup i also think its transferware. Did you see the patterns are not even at the edge of the plate and some sort of double picture has placed upon the outer layer of the plate.

 

Recognition? I think basically, having seen so much of it! Don is spot on with the identifiers: foot rim, design - which is very typical of early Victorian - , the clay colour, even the discolouration. I do like the fact that the transfer has been screwed up a bit. It speaks to the hand done nature of it.

 

@Ownedbybear any clue regarding the use of this kind of plate? its quite huge. is it a fruit plate or something? and also any of you guys know whats the name of this design (the picture in the middle) called??

 

How big is it across? CAn you get me a picture of just the middle, please?

 

Hey yeah sure @Ownedbybear il get you a closer pic. well its diameter is larger than the length of a legal paper

 

its exactly 1ft and 2inches or 36cm the diameter

 

Sounds like a large porridge or soup bowl to me. Too small for fruit.

 

Really did they have soup for that large. it could kind of feed the whole family i guess. hehe. By the way were fruit bowl larger than that too?

 

Porridge certainly was served in a large bowl. Fruit was usually on large platters or footed comports/tazzas.
