Paragon 3.jpeg Paragon 2.jpeg Paragon 1.jpeg Good day all

I would like to request some assistance regarding a 49pc Paragon set that I am looking to purchase from a Deceased Estate.

From the pictures that has been send to me I gathered that it is a Poinsettia design. I could only find one entry on E-bay with the exact design but the post is not available anymore, and no information from replacements.com. There is a few Poinsettia designs similar to this one but none with the red seeds in the flower.

On the back stamp I could gather that it may be from early 30's. And could anyone please clarify what the markings next to the back stamp resembles?

    Any help would be appreciated

    TIA

They are gilders or decorators marks, sometimes check marks, just for internal use of the company (ie for working out piece rates etc). They are not meaningful in relation to the design.

That flower is absolutely not a poinsettia.

There's many blue daisies, or asteraceae. That could be a single aster or Michaelmas Daisy.

My point as well, but on most of the searches on Paragon Poinsettia, this design comes up, just in different colours.

Found a listing for this design on Replacements Ltd on this side of the pond. They have no name only the alphanumeric info from the underside - G1374.

And I agree - anybody calling it Poinsettia is mistaken. Probably a mistaken listing sometime back that has been copied to death?

Paragon patterns and designs were not well documented like other pottery houses were. Only a few that were made famous and popular by the Royal family have retained their names. over the years. Your set is interesting in that it was created during the short lived Royal Paragon period. The pottery house became emboldened by the attention it got from Queen Mary and the Duchess of York and started calling themselves "Royal" Paragon in 1930. They were told to cease using the mark, which they did about 1933 but they were still given their royal warrant by the queen.

Pottery painters are not known for their botany. Nor are some sellers.

Paragon used numbers for patterns a fair bit.
